SMUD’s home battery storage program can combine an enrollment incentive with ongoing virtual power plant income. The timing of PTO, battery eligibility, number of batteries, Tesla participation, and the Solar and Storage Rate all affect which parts of the value can be included in a quote decision.

  • The current model uses nameplate capacity at $500/kWh less a 20% holdback, capped at $10,000 per household, for the enrollment incentive.
  • Tesla VPP income is modeled at $110, $220, or $330 per quarter depending on the selected battery count; non-Tesla VPP income is currently modeled as zero.
  • The enrollment incentive is excluded when PTO is marked as more than 90 days ago, and program rules should be confirmed with SMUD before purchase.

Yes. You can estimate the enrollment incentive and energy value, but the current first version models ongoing quarterly VPP income as zero for non-Tesla batteries. Check SMUD’s current eligible-model and participation terms for the system you are considering.

Why does PTO timing matter for the SMUD rebate estimate?

The current model includes the enrollment incentive only when PTO was within the selected 90-day window. The actual deadline and documentation requirements should be verified against SMUD’s current program instructions.

Does the result include the value of backup power?

The first-pass result does not assign a guaranteed dollar value to outage protection. Backup value depends on your priorities, outage exposure, load profile, system configuration, and the price you are willing to pay for resilience.
